Syzygy

A sample-juggling instrument of sorts

2026

What is Syzygy?

Syzygy is a sample-juggling instrument or something like that. It has a live-capture capability, called the Observer, that can capture live samples from your audio inputs with a simple audio-event recognition algorithm or through manual selection. These samples can be organized into Pools, which are like tracks but not really. These samples in these pools become the material for the synths that live in the synth strip. These synths use the samples in the pools (called clips) in many manners: they can be granular synths, sampler playback-style synths, wavetable synths, and more to come in the future. Also, these synths' parameters can be modulated by Motion Modules to give some liveliness to the system.

These are the basics of the system. There is also Freesound.org integration, MIDI control, a live-record button, and some more stuff.

It is still being developed, and the future of it is to be determined.

Demos!

Here you can find some demos in video form, where I showcase the instrument in action at this early stage.

Syzygy — Demo IA pretty full pool with 3 synths at the same time.
Syzygy — Demo IIA demonstration of motion in a simpler pool.

What?

This synth started as an experiment emerging from my desire to manipulate live audio in a more flexible way, transforming it to electronic music and soundscapes. In a highly improvised environment, where invention emerges from live experimentation in a playful interactive spirit, i wanted to be able to be reactive, and my systems to use real just-born material.

Afer instant experimentation, the creative process may often lead to more formalized structures, so the intrument had to be able to be able to evolve to that phase of creation too. These needs led to the creation of syzygy and are the sources of the design decisions that shaped it.
